Cristhian Rivera suspect in the death of Mollie Tibbetts - US



Officials believe that the 20-year-old student of the University of Iowa, Mollie Tibbetts, was found dead. The college student was missing more than a month after a night of jogging in her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa.


Greg Willey, Central Iowa's Vice President of Crime Stoppers, told the Associated Press (AP) that Tibbet's body was discovered Tuesday.

A reward for information leading to Tibbett's discovery reached $ 385,718, according to Crime Stopper of Central Iowa. Willey told the AP that the funds would likely be used for information that would help authorities whoever could be responsible for the death of the 20-year-old.

"Once they catch their breath, this will be a weapon going the other way to catch the person who did it," Willey said.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation told Newsweek that it would hold a press conference in Montezuma, Iowa, at 4:00 pm local time (5:00 pm EST).

"Law enforcement agencies are not publishing anything until the press conference," said spokesman Mitch Mortvedt Newsweek.


The agency told KCRG that "a significant amount of information" would be shared during the conference. Tibbetts mysteriously disappeared on July 18 while living with her boyfriend. After she had not come to work the next day, her family reported her missing. Investigators recently announced they would focus on five locations in and around Brooklyn. 

Iowa police confirmed that he has a man in custody for the murder of Mollie Tibbets, a 20-year-old university student, claiming that he admitted pursuing her on a rural road and that he was the one who then led the detectives to the countryside. of corn where they found the body.

The suspect was identified as Christian Bahena-Rivera, 24, who according to authorities is a Mexican who has been living in the United States for at least four years without documents.


Rivera was charged with first-degree murder, with a potential life sentence, according to Rick Rahn, a special agent in charge of the sector in the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, The Washington Post reported.

Tibbetts, who studied psychology at the University of Iowa, was missing since she ran from her boyfriend's home on July 18 in Brooklyn, Iowa, a small town of about 1,500 inhabitants from where he is originally from. Rahn stated that Rivera told the detectives that he saw Mollie run, he approached her and ran to her side or behind her. The suspect even transmitted to the authorities that she had grabbed her phone and threatened to call the police.

Rivera continued to persecute her and then kidnapped her, explained Rahn, who declined to give more details about the Tibbetts murder, arguing that the investigation is ongoing.

The disappearance of the young woman had unleashed a massive search that included dozens of FBI agents, in addition to the local and state police agencies. Efforts were concentrated in the Brooklyn area and its surroundings, including farms, ponds, and homes.

An autopsy is planned for this Wednesday to determine how and when Mollie Tibbetts died.
