Andrew Gillum had accepted the Florida governor's race

The wave of anger against the president falls at the polls, but the Republicans maintain control of the Senate

The Democratic Party has regained control of the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, after eight years of Republican majority, and has left weakened what remains of Donald Trump's mandate. It has not managed, however, to strike what would have been a lethal blow, since the Conservatives maintain the Senate. It opens a stage of uncertainty because the controversial Trumpist dreams of raising a wall with Mexico to stop immigration or the liquidation of the health reform of Barack Obama are mortally wounded.

Discontent with the president, one of the most unpopular and divisive rulers in recent history, has mobilized progressive voters in legislative elections marked by high participation and the reflection of a new time. Americans have chosen a Congress with more women and more racial and religious diversity than ever.

The conquest of the lower house by the Democrats moves the tectonic plates in Washington. The president has ruled so far from the White House with the reassurance that across Pennsylvania Avenue also reigned his, but the change of majority brings many problems for the Republican.

The Democrats will be able to block the approval of laws, since they require the approval of both parts of the Capitol, and to impel their own legislative projects, although soon they give of bruces with the Republican wall in the Senate. They also have the necessary votes to initiate investigations into Trump and his businesses, and even impel a process of impeachment, although it would hardly prosper because he needs two-thirds of the senators.

The so-called blue wave, a color that identifies the party of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, came without enough force to drag the House, a very difficult company while only renewed 35 of the 100 seats and most, 26, and they were Democrats. In fact, the Republicans consolidate their majority in the Senate, keeping at least 51 representatives.

Democrats recover the House of Representatives and weaken Trump

Once again, the rural vote tended to favor Republicans and urban and suburban areas to Democrats. But for the latter, the triumph in the House of Representatives, which have already reached the 219-seat majority, gives hopeful signs: they won districts in which they were not favorites in New York, Texas, Illinois or Virginia. And in the battle for the position of governor they achieved important victories in Michigan and Wisconsin, areas of the industrial belt that in 2016 embraced the tycoon.

It was also a good night for the feminist movement, invigorated by the MeToo wave of protest against sexual harassment, before a president accused of abuses by several women and who has been characterized by his often sexist comments. With the results available at midnight, it was already known that the Capitol would have the largest number of female congressmen in its history.

The state representative sponsored a bill that offers undocumented students university enrollment rates in the state. And as he explained, his low-tax economic platform will lead to more jobs, businesses, and opportunities for students to find high-paying jobs once they graduate.
