Brian Kolfage launched the collection on the GoFundMe
website on Sunday and by Thursday night he had raised 9.7 million dollars. The
site says that the goal is to collect 1 billion dollars.
In a statement posted on the crowdfunding page, Kolfage says
the wall can be built if everyone who voted for Trump contributes $ 80 each.
"As a veteran who has given so much, three limbs, I
feel very committed to this country to ensure that future generations have
everything we have today," Kolfage wrote.
Kolfage lost three limbs in the Iraq war in 2004. He said he has contacted the Trump government to know where to send the money once the collection ends.
Kolfage, who according to the GoFundMe site lives in Miramar
Beach, Florida, said in an email that at the moment he was not available to
comment. The acceptance of the Kolfage collection is very different
from the reaction generated when Arizona lawmakers made a similar attempt to
raise money for the border fence several years ago.
Lawmakers passed a law in 2011 to set up a website to raise
$ 50 million for a border fence. However, that attempt failed and only about $
265,000 was raised.
Trump announced on Thursday that he will not sign a bill
passed by the Senate to continue funding the government because it does not
provide the billions of dollars needed for its wall. It was his second setback
in a matter of days after conservative allies and critics accused him of
reversing his central campaign promise. His decision has caused chaos in
Congress and raised the risk of a federal closure this weekend.
The Kolfage page has inspired at least one opposite
fundraiser. Another GoFundMe page was created on Wednesday to raise money for
"stairs to cross the Trump Wall."
The site posted a goal of $ 100
million and had raised more than $ 20,000 in donations by Thursday afternoon.
All the money will go to a non-profit organization that offers education and
legal services to refugee and immigrant families.
