Amazon going to invest $1 billion in Chile on astronomy data

The possible arrival of the company in the country is known after the government made official on the eve a plan to create a virtual data observatory, with which it seeks to unify the information of the international telescopes located in the country.

In May, Amazon Web Services vice president Teresa Carlson said they would like to invest in the country in the long-term

The US giant Amazon would install a center in Chile to process astronomy data and companies, an announcement that would be finalized in October and that would involve an investment of about USD 1,000 million, the newspaper El Mercurio reported.

Amazon bets strongly in Chile. The American e-commerce group completes the opening of its data center for the processing of astronomy data and companies in the country. The company has invested a billion dollars in the new data center, which will be located at the Telefónica facilities in Santiago.

Last July, Amazon announced that it would finally opt for Chile for the start-up of the data center, after assessing its installation in Argentina. In parallel, the group plans to open a distribution center in the city of Santiago, thus reducing delivery times for products from the United States.

Subsequently, the Chilean president, Sebastián Piñera, met in July with the founder and director of the firm, Jeff Bezos, to analyze strategic alliances, within the framework of a technological forum in the United States.

Currently, Amazon is in full expansion in Latin America. For this year, the company plans to open the doors of its third warehouse in Mexico. Recently, Amazon launched its first customer service center in Colombia, in the Connect business park in Bogotá, coinciding with the launch of Amazon Web Service in the coffee country.

Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, Amazon is currently one of the world's e-commerce giants. Although the group does not detail its turnover by product categories, it is estimated that the company generated sales of between 18,000 million dollars and 36,000 million dollars thanks to fashion in 2016. The company plans to double its fashion sales in all the world until 2020, reaching a business of up to 85,000 million dollars.

The US electronic commerce giant will launch its data center in the metropolitan region of Santiago, after an investment of 1,000 million dollars. According to media, Amazon has also analyzed the possibility of installing the data and services center in the cloud in Argentina
